Oil Painting with cast and flameworked elements

48 by 48 inches

Inspired by “Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?” by Paul Gauguin. My painting is a conversation about the effect of DNA and bioengineering on contemporary life. The cloaked figure represents the effects of genetic engineering on humans. The human genome is represented both in glass and oil paint at the perimeter of the canvas. A monkey sits on an artist’s palate; the monkey is close to us genetically but cannot create this painting. Figure 8s in the lower left represent the number of farmers per day in India loosing their farms because they use BT seeds, which are biologically engineered. The double snakes and messages within them represent science dollars and current events, which drive the biotech market. The window at the upper right represents gene sequencing and the future.
